Overall, it was a great weekend for the NBA. I thoroughly enjoyed my Saturday and Sunday watching the exploits of Tim Duncan, LeBron James, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. Most of the games were played at a high level and the stars performed up to snuff. The exceptionof maybe the Celtics verses the Hawks, every series looks like it’s going at least five games. We saw LeBron let his playing do the talking as Cleveland came from behind to defeat the cold shooting Washington Wizards (I think I saw Antawn Jamison miss another three point jumper). We saw San Antonio get off the canvas and defeat Phoenix thanks to two game tying three pointers by Michael Finley and Tim Duncan. In a gritty yet dazzling performance, Chris Paul made it look easy in the Big Easy as New Orleans came back for a game one victory against Dallas. In a performance worthy of his donning a cape and a “S” on his chest during the slam dunk contest, Dwight went “Wilt Chamberlin” on the Raptors with a 25 pt, 22 reb game. And in LA Kobe, Pau Gasol and the Lakers gave the Nuggets a Rocky Mountain low by hanging 128 points.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS…
IF I’M AVERY JOHNSON I’M POLISHING UP MY RESUME AND TELLING MY AGENT TO START MAKING CALLS AROUND THE LEAGUE ABOUT JOB AVAILABILITY.
- It might not be fair and it may be a mistake if it happens, but Avery Johnson might want to start looking for his next opportunity if Dallas cannot make it out of the first round against New Orleans. Owner Mark Cuban has put to much of an investment to see consecutive first round playoff defeats. If the Mavericks go out in the first round again, I don’t see Johnson surviving to get another chance to succeed with Dallas.
WILL DETROIT EVER LEARN IT LESSON?
- One would have thought after giving away the Eastern Conference finals last year because of a lack of focus and respect for the opposition that Detroit wanted to make an on court statement about that. Well they did…From watching them play game one against Philly, their statement was they didn’t learn a damn thing. They jumped out to a lead against a team that was looking for them to drop the hammer and have garbage time commence halfway through the 4th quarter, then tooka deep breath, kick their feet up and watch as Philly roared back to win. Detroit will win this series but tell me how are they going to defeat Boson again?
